THE STORY ... from Wikipedia...
Blackadder II is the second series of the BBC sitcom Blackadder, written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton, which aired from 9 January 1986 to 20 February 1986. The series is set in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558–1603), and saw the principal character, Edmund, Lord Blackadder, as a Tudor courtier attempting to win the favour of the Queen while avoiding the fate that befell many of her suitors.
The series saw a number of significant changes from the format of The Black Adder, notably Ben Elton replacing Rowan Atkinson as the second writer, filming in studio sets, rather than on location, the introduction of the more familiar Machiavellian "Blackadder" character and a less intelligent Baldrick.
Randy, ruthless and rotten to the core, Lord Blackadder is in Hastings from 11th May to 19th May, together with his servant Baldrick, Queenie and dopey Lord Percy.
Pelican Theatre grovelled at the feet of Ben Elton and the BBC and secured permission to perform the second series of Blackadder in exchange for a cheque made out to Comic Relief. Three months later, we’ve rehearsed the play and costumed the actors, and we’ll be treading the boards at the Hastings Hall (3 High Street, Hastings) on Friday May 11th at 8pm, Saturday May 12th at 2pm and 8pm, and the following Friday and Saturday at the same times.
The director Tom Lawrence also acts in the play as the dashing Lord Flasheart, the dastardly Ludwig and a very sleazy and hairy sailor called Arthur. Queenie, played by Sarah Ferris is childish, spoilt and ruthless. Lord Melchett (Gordon Gribbin) suave and grovelling, Nursie (Cyntha Gribbin) eccentric to the point of madness, Lord Percy (Adam Platenkamp) naïve and gullible and Baldrick (Paul Crea) dense, dirty and disgusting, and in the end the most lovable character on the stage.
Sophie Lawrence, Bethany Leech Jessica Warner, Trent Katalis, Emily Bonnici and Brittany Prentice play small but significant parts and Brady Dawkins is awesomely insane as Captain Rum, the legless, brainless sea dog.
But the man who holds it all together with a twinkle in his eye and a tongue of acid is Leigh Piper as Blackadder (we couldn’t afford the two million dollars for Rowan Atkinson). Leigh drives the play along with a faultless performance which ranges from nasty to sadistic with a short visit from Mr Pathetic to add a little variety along the way.
This is an ensemble performance in which the cast all showcase each other’s talents and demonstrate the creative and enthusiastic genius of Pelican Theatre.
